The U.S. Department of Labor has assessed $25,295 in civil penalties against two Baton Rouge amusement complexes for alleged violations of federal child labor laws. Two two complexes -- Blue Bayou Waterpark LLC and Dixie Landin' LLC -- are owned by Samuel B. Haynes, Jr.
During a review of attendance and payroll records spanning from March 23, 2009 to March 22, 2011, the labor department said its investigators found that 49 minors ages 14 and 15 were allowed to work more than eight hours a day at the complexes, violating the Fair Labor Standards Act's child labor provisions.
The complexes have agreed to come into compliance with the federal requirements and will make a series of adjustments on their properties to avoid future violations, according to the labor department.
The Fair Labor Standards Act limits the number of hours employees under the age of 16 can work. Fourteen and 15-year-olds may not work more than eight hours a day or 40 hours a week when school is not in session. They may not work more than three hours on a school day or more than 18 hours in a school week.
I know the parent of someone that works there. Not only is what's being investigated true, they pay these kids LESS than the minimum wage (about $5/ hour). Also, the tips in the tip jars (at the concessions) go directly to management and are not shared with the kids doing the actual work. It's like a little bit of the Chinese work ethic in our own backyard.
